Heart-Shaped Tomatoes is a cookbook about Elda Cristini, or Nonna,
a 102-year-old Italian immigrant grandmother for whom cooking has remained a constant thread throughout her storied life.

Meet Elda!

On May 18, 2022, Elda turned 102 years old. It gave Dimitri the perfect opportunity to interview her about cooking and what it means to her.

As always, she didn’t disappoint!

The goal of Heart-Shaped Tomatoes has always been to preserve Elda’s spirit. While not everyone will be able to share a table with Elda, our hope has been to get as close as possible.

So much more than recipes…

Heart-Shaped Tomatoes uses recipes, photography, and personal essays as an entry point to examine themes of independence, generational knowledge, love, and family.

The intimacy provided in the book allows readers to be taken in by Elda and her stories, and to reconnect with the people in their own lives that she reminds them of.
